Got a funny story for you guys this morning….Take a read and see if it doesn’t bring a smile to your lips.
Let to set the scene real quick for you.
I had just finished a short black at a cafe across the road from the gym, before heading over and preparing for battle (battle against the barbell..heavy squat day!)
I started warming up, set one….two….three…
Then out of the corner of my eye, I see something.
It’s a man.
He is going hard. Drenched in sweat. Smashing out the pushups before super setting with pulldowns.
Thing was….it looked EXACTLY like Rafael Nadal.
- Headband on…
- All Nike clothing (his sponsor)….
- The same his face…
I swore it was him.
and since it was the very day after the Australian Open tennis grand slam, I was like WOW, this guy is a machine…so hungry for success…
What an elite level athlete!
I had to speak with him. Say hello. Ask him about the key to his success (always curious)
But, I didn’t want to bother him during his workout (nothing worse, right!?)
So I decided to wait and try to time things so we would finish at the same time.
Over the next hour or so, I saw him talk to about a dozen different people, a couple of official looking people (his tour team) and finish up his workout at the same time I did.
During the gym session I was casually trying to listen in when he talked to his buddies to hear if he was speaking spanish (just so I could be sure it was him)…but i couldn’t really hear.
But I still thought, yep, 99% sure this is him.
And then, as I was walking out, he just happened to be standing there checking his phone…
Must’ve been waiting for his tour team to finish before they head back to the hotel, or maybe hit the courts?
I thought…this is it. This is my moment to meet the number 2 tennis player in the world!
Who knows, maybe we could be friends? Maybe he will come on my podcast? (that would be cool)
Anyway….I just decided to go for it.
So I build up the courage to go and speak with him.
“How’s it going, man…?”
He looks up from his phone….
And in the most Australian accent you can ever imagine: “Ahh….How’s it going, mate??”
I nearly died. I stumbled. I didn’t know what to say.
I made up some line about how he was training hard and it was really good to see.
He said thanks (but was a little creeped out to be honest…I would be too)
I said goodbye and he mentioned he needed to just get through a couple of emails.
I was more than happy to leave.
Anyway, the lesson here (even if it’s at my expense) is, if you don’t ask, you don’t get.
Imagine if it was Rafa? That would be a good story.
But, even though it wasn’t, I still got a good story.
Here’s the big idea, Asking is always a win – win.
Because I asked, I now have more courage,
Because I asked, I now have a story to tell you,
And because I asked, I have a funny experience to journal about and maybe a new friend at the gym (although I think that guy will be avoiding me for a while).
So I’m gonna keep on asking, and even if it fails, I still win….
Have a great day and speak soon.
